School Lunches

SCHOOL LUNCH

All children have the opportunity for a cooked meal or bring a packed lunch to school.

COOKED LUNCH

All our school meals are freshly produced daily at Christian Malford School and transferred in hot boxes to Walter Powell.  The cost is £2.50 per day for all KS2 children.

All Reception and Key Stage 1 pupils are entitled to Universal Infant Free School Meals, however those in receipt of certain benefits (including Key Stage 2 pupils) who complete a form and meet the criteria can obtain extra funds for the school which can be used towards your uniform costs, school trip costs etc.  If you think you may be eligible, please contact the school office in confidence.

Every day your child can choose from three hot dishes and a dessert. We also provide cooked meals to Walter Powell Pre-School who join us in the school hall for lunch.

All the meals adhere to the government guidelines for healthy school meals. All our food is locally sourced and often the vegetables come from our own school garden – grown by the children in gardening club.

Our lunches fully adhere to government based standards for primary school children. This includes:

  • no offal;
  • no economy burgers;
  • no economy sausages;
  • no salt;
  • no chocolate (only cocoa powder);
  • no fried foods; and
  • no processed, shaped food products.

We grow and use our own vegetables from the school garden, as much as possible. The rest of the fruit and vegetables are purchased from a local supplier.

Our meat is supplied fresh from the local butcher near Royal Wootton Bassett, which ensures our food is ethically produced and animal welfare standards are excellent.

We have a a three week menu and encourage our children to try new things, especially fruit and vegetables. We offer a wide variety of food with a choice of two dishes every day.  Special diets can be catered for.

The children at Somerfords’ Walter Powell enjoy their school lunches and lunch hour. We encourage and expect good table manners and for children to benefit from the social aspects of eating together.

PACKED LUNCH

Children also have the option of bringing a packed lunch to school.

We promote healthy eating and currently hold the Silver award.  We ask that packed lunches do not contain sweets or fizzy drinks and all children are encouraged to eat their savoury before sweet.  Water is always available at lunchtime and our MDSA’s are always on hand to help open those tricky yoghurt tubes!
